Meet Francis Laporte, artist and co-founder of Perséides Studio who recently installed the interactive art installation, The Diamonds on the Flatiron North Plaza. As a part of our Winter Glow program, The Diamonds is on view now through February 28.
1. Congratulations on your art installation, The Diamonds, making its New York City debut at the Flatiron North Plaza as a part of Flatiron NoMad Partnership’s ‘Winter Glow’ program. What was your reaction upon hearing the news?
Thank you! Honestly, we were amazed! We couldn’t imagine a better place to present our art installation than the Flatiron Plaza. It’s such an iconic location!
2. Tell us more about the installation’s concept, inspiration, and its name.
The main idea behind the creation of The Diamonds was to offer a fun and luminous work that would, in a way, transport us back to our childhood. The carousel immediately came to mind. The same goes for the music, which draws inspiration from traditional music boxes. Then, as the shape of the piece developed with its glowing rods, the name “The Diamonds” became an obvious choice.
3. The Diamonds is an interactive art piece. What do you hope the public’s takeaway will be from engaging with your artwork?
We hope that our work will spark encounters and spontaneous exchanges. We want people to enjoy discovering the luminous shapes and the melodies they create together while playing with The Diamonds.
4. You are both accomplished artists and visual designers. What inspired you to choose a career in the visual arts? For aspiring artists and entrepreneurs, what professional advice can you share?
We both come from the world of live performance. When everything came to a halt during the pandemic, we realized just how important it is for us to bring people together to share extraordinary moments, where emotions arise as if by magic. That’s why we chose this profession. Art, in general, has this infinite power. So, our advice is: if you have a passion for creating these kinds of meaningful connections, go for it! The world needs it…
5. Flatiron and NoMad are known for their distinctively designed buildings and public spaces. Do you have a favorite architectural element in the area?
Just steps away from The Diamonds, there’s Madison Square Park—a intimate spot to relax while watching passersby stroll by. We love it.
6. When you’re in New York City and visiting Flatiron and NoMad, how do you like to spend your time in the neighborhood? Any favorites come to mind?
We recently stayed at the Freehand Hotel NYC, and the place truly captivated us. Whether it’s enjoying an aperitif at Bar Calico or later sipping a cocktail at Broken Shaker, the décor and atmosphere are simply perfect.
7. Finally, choose three words to describe having an art installation in Flatiron and NoMad.
Proud, happy and grateful.
