Meet Fernando Avila Aguilar, photographer behind Flatiron & NoMad’s outdoor photo exhibit Living Memories: Portraits of Día de Muertos as part of Día de Muertos Week on view from Monday, October 28 – Friday, November 1 at Iron23: 29 West 23rd Street.

1. What was your reaction when you found out that your photos would be exhibited in NY?

A lot of joy and excitement to be able to show a beautiful tradition from my land in one of the largest cities in the world, NY.

2. Tell us more about the concept and inspiration behind the exhibition.

It is a series of photos taken at the time to portray the spirituality and emotions of the Purépecha people, awaiting the arrival of the souls of our dead.

3. What do you hope the public will take away when they see your exhibition?

That they can learn about this Purépecha tradition of how we celebrate death on this date in Patzcuaro Michoacán.

4. You were born in Pátzcuaro and have been a photographer for more than 27 years. What inspired you to pursue a photography career?

When I realized I could snatch a moment from time through photography, I knew that was my path.

5. What have been some of your favorite moments so far?

In one of the photos I took in Tzintzuntzan, people were carrying the wreath of flowers to the grave of the deceased and when they arrived they played a song that made my skin crawl and I cried behind my camera, but I kept taking photos.

6. What professional advice would you share with aspiring photographers?

To follow their intuition and instincts when photographing, everyone has a special way of taking photos that catch our attention.

7. What inspires you most about having an exhibition in such an important district internationally as Flatiron & NoMad.

It is a great space to project to the whole world so that many people get to know a small part of the Purépecha culture and a pleasure that it is through my photographs, I hope you enjoy it and live it as I do.

8. Do you have a favorite place to photograph?

Not really. But I try to capture the essence of the people and the magic of the place, I really enjoy taking photos of people in nature or in the woods and if there is fog I love that environment.

9. Finally, choose 3 words to describe having an exhibition in Flatiron & NoMad.

Projection. Culture. Community.

1. ¿Cuál fue su reacción al enterarte que tus fotos estarían exhibidas en NY?

Mucha Alegría y emoción por poder mostrar una bella tradición de mi tierra en una de las cuidades más grandes del mundo como lo es NY.

2. ¿Cuéntanos más sobre el concepto y la inspiración detrás de la exhibición?

Es una serie de fotos tomadas en el momento para retratar la espiritualidad y emociones de la gente purépecha, en espera de la llegada de las animas de nuestros muertos.

 3. ¿Qué esperas que el público se lleve cuando vea su exhibición?

Que puedan conocer esta tradición purépecha de cómo celebramos la muerte en esta fecha, pues los esperamos con alegría para que convivan con nosotros.

4. Nació en Pátzcuaro y ha sido fotógrafo durante mas de 27 años, ¿Qué lo inspiro a seguir una carrera en fotografía?

Cuando me di cuenta que podía arrebatarle un momento al tiempo a través de la fotografía, supe que ese era mi camino.

 5. ¿Cuáles han sido algunos de sus momentos favoritos hasta ahora?

En una de las fotos que tome en Tzintzuntzan, las personas llevaban la corona de flores a la tumba del fallecido y cuando llegaron tocaron una canción que se me erizo la piel y llore detrás de mi cámara, pero seguí tomando fotos.

6. ¿Qué consejo profesional compartiría con los aspirantes a fotógrafos?  

Que singan su intuición y sus instintos al fotografiar, cada uno tiene una forma especial de tomar fotografías que nos llaman la atención.

7. Que es lo que mas le inspira de tener una exhibición en un distrito tan importante a nivel internacional como Flatiron & NoMad?

Que es un magnífico espacio para proyectar a todo el mundo para que muchas personas conozcan una pequeña parte de la cultura Purépecha y un gusto que sea a través de mis fotografías, espero lo disfruten y lo vivan al igual que yo. 

8. ¿Tiene algún lugar favorito para fotografiar?  

En realidad, no. Pero trato de tomar la esencia de las personas y la magia del lugar, disfruto mucho tomar fotos a las personas en la naturaleza o en los bosques y si hay niebla me encanta ese ambiente.
