Feb 26, 2025

Meet Catherine Laureau, Development Director of Mirari, the multidisciplinary creative studio who installed the interactive art installation, Spectrum on the Flatiron South Plaza. As a part of our Winter Glow program, Spectrum is on view now through February 28.

1. Congratulations on Mirari’s art installation, Spectrum, making its New York City debut at the Flatiron North Plaza as a part of Flatiron NoMad Partnership’s ‘Winter Glow’ program. What was your reaction upon hearing the news?

For us, New York embodies creativity, diversity, and the dynamic energy of people coming together. The city has always been a hub for artistic expression, and having Spectrum come to life in such an iconic and vibrant space is both an honor and a milestone for our studio. Hearing the news was truly exciting—we were thrilled by the opportunity to share our vision in a city that constantly reinvents itself. It’s humbling to think that New Yorkers and visitors alike will interact with our work, making it part of their own urban experience.

2. Tell us more about the installation’s concept, inspiration, and its name.

Spectrum is an interactive art installation that transforms voice into light, creating a visual representation of communication. It invites people to reflect on how we connect, how our voices resonate in space, and how individual contributions blend to form a collective experience. The name Spectrum refers to both the spectrum of light and the diversity of human expression. Just like light is composed of multiple wavelengths, our voices and emotions exist on a vast spectrum. The installation serves as a metaphor for these nuances, highlighting how every voice adds to the richness of human connection. Our inspiration came from the idea of making the invisible visible—translating sound into a tangible and ephemeral display of light that brings people together, even for just a moment.

3. Spectrum is an interactive art piece. What do you hope the public’s takeaway will be from engaging with the artwork?

We hope Spectrum sparks a sense of wonder and curiosity, inviting people to play, explore, and rediscover the power of their own voices. In today’s fast-paced world, communication is often instantaneous and digital, but Spectrum creates a physical and shared moment where people can see the impact of their voice in real-time. It’s about fostering connection—not just with the artwork, but with others in the space. Whether people experience it alone or with friends, we want them to leave with a heightened awareness of how their voice contributes to the collective rhythm of a city, a community, and a conversation.

4. Describe your role as Development Director at Mirari. What aspect of the job excites you the most? What inspired you to pursue a career at a multidisciplinary creative studio?

As Development Director at Mirari, my role is to bridge creative vision with strategic growth. I oversee the expansion of our work into new markets, cultivate partnerships, and ensure that each project aligns with our values and artistic mission. What excites me the most is the intersection of art, technology, and human connection. I love seeing how immersive experiences can transform public spaces, engage audiences, and leave a lasting impact. Every project is an opportunity to push boundaries, collaborate with incredible talents, and craft experiences that resonate emotionally with people. I was drawn to a multidisciplinary creative studio because it offers a dynamic, ever-evolving environment where storytelling, design, and innovation come together. Mirari isn’t just about technology or aesthetics—it’s about crafting meaningful experiences. That philosophy is what inspires me every day.

5. When you’re in New York City and visiting Flatiron & NoMad, how do you like to spend your time in the neighborhood? Any favorites come to mind?

Flatiron & NoMad have such a unique energy—where history meets innovation, and where art, design, and creativity thrive. I love strolling through Madison Square Park, taking in the public art installations and the ever-changing atmosphere of the city. Of course, a stop at the Flatiron Building is always a must—it’s an architectural icon that never loses its charm. For a great coffee or bite, nearby ABC Kitchen is a favorite for its fresh, locally sourced menu. And when I have time, I enjoy exploring the design shops and creative spaces that make this neighborhood so inspiring.

6. Finally, choose three words to describe having an art installation in Flatiron & NoMad.

Thrilling. Transformative. Connected.
