Black Orpheus (1959, Brazil)

Set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s, Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus depicts Orpheus, a bus driver and amateur musician, Eurydice, a young woman who arrives in town to visit her cousin, and their neighbors as they prepare costumes and rehearse music for Carnival. Stunning colors and a Bossa Nova soundtrack punctuate the love story between the two protagonists in this modern retelling of the ancient Greek tragedy.

Baruch Professor Tshombe Miles will introduce the film.
