Join TJG on Thurs 8.13 for a duo performance by pianist Sylvie Courvoisier & saxophonist Alden Hellmuth. 

Pianist-composer Sylvie Courvoisier has earned renown for balancing two distinct worlds: the deep, richly detailed chamber music of her European roots and the grooving, hook-laden sounds of the avant-jazz scene in New York City, her home for more than two decades. Courvoisier crosses borders with a creative spirit and a free mind; her music-making is as playful as it is intense, as steeped in tradition as it is questing and intrepid. NPR’s Kevin Whitehead has encapsulated her art in an evocative way: “Some pianists approach the instrument like it’s a cathedral. Sylvie Courvoisier treats it like a playground.”

Alden Hellmuth is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser based in New York City. A graduate of the Herbie Hancock Institute, she received the 2025 German Jazz Prize for Debut Album of the Year (International) and has performed internationally at major venues and festivals including the NYC Winter Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl, and Blue Note Jazz Festival. Alden has been recognized with numerous honors, including ASCAP’s Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award (2024), Chamber Music America’s Performance Plus Grant (2025), and the Focusyear Fellowship (2021-22). As an artist, Alden seeks expression through freedom, intuition, and a deep commitment to her craft.
