Lázaro and the Shark: Cuba Under the Surface (2022, Cuba)
As Carnival season approaches in Santiago de Cuba, Lázaro, a relatively new Conga leader and young father, orchestrates an elaborate performance working with his community to build a float, sew costumes, and choreograph dances. Will he be able to lead his band to victory over the well-established Conga band led by The Shark? The documentary follows the two men on their pursuit for victory, as Carnival offers a celebratory respite for a community dealing with poverty and political repression.
Filmmaker William Sabourin O’Reilly and Baruch Professor Ted Henken in conversation will be in conversation after the film
