About Chasing Rainbows by Charlotte Colbert
Curated by New Public, Chasing Rainbows marks the global premiere of Charlotte Colbert’s monumental 30’ high steel sculptures, presented as part of the NYC DOT Art program across Manhattan’s iconic districts, Flatiron NoMad and Meatpacking. Colbert’s first exhibition of work in NYC speaks directly to the city’s energy; its movement, its density of dreams, and its long history of reinvention.
In Flatiron & NoMad, Dreamland Sirens rises as a single, watchful dual colored eye supported by a column of tears. Referencing Alice in Wonderland and the act of dreaming as a collective force, the sculpture reflects the surrounding city back onto itself, bridging inner vision and public space next to The Flatiron Building, one of New York’s first steel-framed skyscrapers and Beaux-Arts architectural marvels.
In the Meatpacking District, Where Angels Live takes the form of a reflective steel tree adorned with votive-like charms inspired by relics and talismans, objects believed to hold meaning through collective belief. Set within a neighborhood shaped by cycles of transformation, from the male-dominated meat industry of the late 19th to 20th Century, to one of New York’s most historic LGBTQ+ neighborhoods in the 1970s, the work becomes a contemporary shrine, honoring what is unseen, remembered, and carried forward.
Collectively, the works bring childlike wonder into dialogue with the monumental scale of Manhattan – inviting us to stop, look, and imagine, offering moments of wonder amidst the buzz of city life.
