Flatiron Plazas Design & Construction
As part of his second State of the City Address on January 26, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams built on the Making New York Work for Everyone action plan released the month prior by announcing $375 million in capital funding to create high-quality public spaces and permanent Open Streets in all five boroughs, including the permanent reconstruction of the Flatiron Public Plazas and Worth Square.
The things we love most about the Plazas will now be permanent fixtures at THE crossroads of crossroads – Broadway, Fifth Avenue & 23rd Street. Public art installations? Check. Tables, chairs & shade umbrellas? Of course. Tasty lunch options and a wildly underrated al fresco happy hour? You got it. An iconic view to help position and showcase your brand? That too.
The Plazas were first transformed from lanes of traffic into world-class public space in September 2008 and have become town squares where locals, neighborhood employees, and visitors from around the world converge each day. This extraordinary commitment supports the Mayor’s continued focus on New Yorkers’ quality of life by providing clean, accessible, and new public spaces.
We look forward to working with the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), NYC Department of Design & Construction (DDC), and Madison Square Park Conservancy to update the design and scope of the entire project (21st Street to 32nd Street in Flatiron & NoMad including the Plazas, Worth Square, and NoMad Piazza to Greeley Square) this year with shovels in-the-ground soon thereafter.
