NoMad Piazza
Nomad Piazza
We first installed the NoMad Piazza Pop-Up plaza on Broadway from 25th to 27th Street for six weeks in fall 2021. The Piazza complemented the thriving outdoor dining scene on and around these two blocks of Broadway where La Pecora Bianca, The Smith, Tortazo, wagamama, Anita Gelato, and Vin Sur Vingt Wine Bar offered al fresco dining under DOT’s Open Restaurants program.
Due to popular demand, we re-launched the Piazza Pop-Up in 2022 as a seasonal plaza that expanded public space, enhanced pedestrian safety, and provided public seating and horticulture amenities as part of DOT’s Seasonal Streets program. The Piazza was open to people walking, sitting, dining, and bicycling, but motor vehicles – other than emergency vehicles – were prohibited.
The Piazza Pop-Up afforded a real-time test of two full plaza blocks that helped inform DOT on their next round of Broadway Vision projects through NoMad. In spring of 2023, Broadway from 25th Street to 32nd Street was resurfaced and redesigned with two full plaza blocks (from 25th Street to 27th Street, the NoMad Piazza footprint), five shared blocks with pedestrian extensions and public seating areas (27th Street to 32nd Street), and two-way bike lanes connecting NoMad and Greeley Square.
