Get to Know: Cheryl Rubin Studio & Gallery
Meet Cheryl Rubin Studio & Gallery, the studio and gallery home to local artist Cheryl Rubin located at 28 West 27th Street, Suite 403. A contemporary abstract artist, Rubin’s paintings focus on her expression of her search for rhythm, harmony, and the unknown through layers of drawing and expressive action painting.
“I have lived and worked in the Flatiron & NoMad area for almost 40 years! It is my favorite neighborhood in New York and it gets better and better all the time with incredible restaurants, shopping, and services,” says Rubin. “Madison Square Park is my oasis. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful park in our neighborhood. It’s where I connect with nature and the changing of the seasons. Both the incredible historic architecture and the Park are an important source of inspiration for my paintings and I am so happy to live and work here.”
Art has been a pivotal role in Rubin’s life from her childhood outside of Philadelphia to present day in Flatiron & NoMad. After receiving her BFA in Sculpture from Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts), Rubin moved to New York City to continue creating both 2-D and 3-D art while working as a brand management executive for Warner Discovery’s DC Entertainment. Now, she dedicates her full-time to her art practice.
Rubin’s painting process stems from a connection to her father’s career in the printing industry. Through pouring paint in gestural motions onto substrates, Rubin is able to press imagery into the canvas. She often creates the imagery in reverse before pressing, which allows for Rubin to create dynamic and organic shapes with texture providing an additional vitality to each painting.
