Marie Saint-Cyr, Founder & CEO of Saint-Cyr Art Studio
Meet Marie Saint-Cyr, Founder & CEO of Saint-Cyr Art Studio. In collaboration with NYC DOT Art, muralists from Saint-Cyr Art Studio vibrantly captured neighborhood icons in our latest bike mural wall located on 25th Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue.
1. Congratulations on the display of your latest mural here in Flatiron! Tell us more about the concept and inspiration behind the design of this community mural.
This mural draws inspiration from the rich history and stunning architecture of Flatiron and NoMad, intertwined with the vibrant energy of the people who enliven these spaces. My goal was to capture the harmony between the area’s timeless elegance and its dynamic, modern spirit. By showcasing iconic landmarks like the Flatiron Building and the Met Life Clock Tower, the mural illustrates the connection between the community’s past, present, and future. I envisioned a piece that not only celebrates the neighborhood’s unique identity but also fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion for everyone who encounters it.
2. As an accomplished visual artist and muralist, your art has been exhibited in several spaces including at the Haitian Embassy. You earned a BFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2018 and studied Studio Art at the Lorenzo de’Medici in Florence, Italy. What inspired you to choose a career in the visual arts? For aspiring artists and entrepreneurs, what professional advice can you share?
My journey into visual arts began with my love for storytelling and a deep connection to my Haitian heritage. Growing up, I was surrounded by vibrant colors, textures, and narratives that reflected resilience and creativity. Studying in Florence and at FIT gave me the technical skills and cultural exposure to refine my style and voice as an artist.
For aspiring artists and entrepreneurs, my advice is to stay true to your vision and be persistent. The art world can be competitive, but finding your unique perspective will set you apart. Build a strong network, continuously develop your craft, and don’t be afraid to learn from failure—it’s part of the process. Also, think beyond your art; embrace the business side of things, like marketing and relationship-building, because that’s how your work reaches people.
3. Speaking of the arts, Flatiron and NoMad are known for their distinctively designed buildings and public spaces. The mural highlights the Met Life Clock Tower, the Flatiron Building, and 236 Fifth which shows the Gilded Lady. Do you have a favorite architectural element in the area?
Absolutely! The intricate details of the Gilded Lady at 236 Fifth also stand out to me!
4. When you’re in Flatiron & NoMad, how do you like to spend your time in the neighborhood? What do you love most about these vibrant communities?
I love walking through Madison Square Park—it’s such a peaceful escape amidst the energy of the city. The neighborhood also has incredible galleries and cozy coffee spots where I often find inspiration or take a moment to reflect.
5. Finally, choose three words to describe having a mural in Flatiron and NoMad.
Gratitude. Legacy. Vibrancy.
