ALL BUSINESSES must have a new waste collection agreement with a DSNY-authorized CWZ carter

Flatiron & NoMad Business Community,

The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is overhauling the City’s commercial waste industry to make NYC cleaner and safer. Beginning September 1, 2026, businesses located within the Midtown South Commercial Waste Zone (CWZ)–which includes the Flatiron & NoMad neighborhoods—must have a new waste collection agreement with a DSNY-authorized CWZ carter.

If your business currently contracts directly with a private waste hauler, please note the following:

  • New contracts must be signed by August 31, 2026.
  • If a new agreement is not in place by September 1, DSNY will assign your business an authorized carter at the maximum allowable rate and minimum allowable pickup frequency.
  • Businesses are encouraged to obtain quotes from multiple authorized carters and negotiate pricing, contract terms, pickup frequency, and additional fees before signing an agreement.

DSNY recommends the following steps:

  • Find your DSNY zone
  • Evaluate your current waste and recycling service needs.
  • Confirm which authorized carters serve your Commercial Waste Zone.
  • Compare pricing using the City’s Commercial Waste Zone tools.
  • Negotiate with multiple authorized carters for the best service and pricing.
  • Sign your new agreement before August 31 (for businesses located in Zone 5/Midtown South)

If your building owner or property manager manages waste collection on behalf of all tenants, you should confirm that your business is included under the building’s new Commercial Waste Zone contract. If you are covered, you do not need to sign a separate agreement.

Once enrolled, businesses will receive a Commercial Waste Zone decal from their authorized carter that must be displayed in a window visible from the sidewalk.
